So sad to realise that Vic, my friend of nearly 40 years died on Saturday 22 November from the effects of stage 4 melanoma. Vic and I joined the Vets around the same time, in 1987 (I think). He and Chris had recently arrived from England with their two boys, Julius and Max. We were both so impressed with the club that we felt we wanted to give something back so jointly introduced the first “Guess your time” run in Kings Park. Vic later moved this run to Hale School, along with its homemade trophy.
Vic wasn’t a competitive runner, he just liked to keep fit and meet like-minded people. We ran at about the same pace so there was lots of chatting on the Sunday runs and we also formed a mid-week training group with some other club members.
Vic was a man of many talents. He had worked in London as a journalist and photographer and he and Chris bought and ran a pub for some years. He was outgoing, sociable, a great host, an entertaining story-teller and good fun. When he took over as editor of the Vetrun he brought a high level of professionalism to the publication and managed for many years to keep members well-informed of club matters as well as adding his own, sometimes quirky personal touch. In recent years he had mostly stopped running but could be seen at Sunday runs photographing members in action. He didn’t like static images and NEVER photographed people eating.
